GALETH BALE NEEDS RONALDO LEAVE REAL MADRID F.C

Part of the problem for Bale is that he plays at the same time as Messi – who re-affirmed so brilliantly against City on Wednesday evening that he could well be the greatest player of all-time – and in the same team as Ronaldo who is challenging the Argentinean.

The fact is that Bale will probably not fulfil his potential until either he or Ronaldo leave Real Madrid. And he does not want to leave.

Right now it is more likely that Ronaldo will go. The Real president Florentino Perez has invested so much in Bale and could not contain his delight at the Welshman’s two goals against Levante last weekend, his first in nine games with the pressure and criticism growing. Perez duly made it clear that there was no way the player was going anywhere.

Ronaldo’s reaction to one of those goals – the frustration he showed that his attempted bicycle kick had not gone in being far greater than his celebration of Bale volleying the loose ball into the net – was revealing. His actions say it all.

So part of the problem for Bale is his relationship with Ronaldo - not because it is bad but because there really is not much of a relationship. The pair are friendly but not friends. There is no chemistry between them and there never would be from the moment Bale signed for Real Madrid and the club refused to disclose it was for a world-record fee – for fear of upsetting Ronaldo whose £80million signing from United it had eclipsed.

Ronaldo also earned a new contract, much to United’s frustration, as it left them feeling they had been used for just that purpose. If Ronaldo wants to return to United this summer then it appears he will have to make more of the running than his former club.

Bale appears to have detached himself from the circus around Ronaldo and concentrated on his own development. Last season ended triumphantly for Bale with 22 goals in 44 matches including that exhilarating run and finish against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and the vital goal in extra-time that won the Champions League Final against Atletico Madrid.

This season has undoubtedly been more of a struggle but only of late and only through the prism of a team that has also faltered and is geared towards servicing Ronaldo. It also can be no coincidence that Bale’s return to goal-scoring coincided with Luka Modric, his former Tottenham Hotspur team-mate and a player who knows how to provide for him, recovering from being out for three months injured.

Sometimes it is forgotten that even the best players in the world can only thrive in a team sport like football if they receive the right service from their team-mates.

Bale is low-maintenance – as the episode with the round of golf showed – and is enjoying life in Madrid. His family has settled also and he has worked a way of ensuring he can keep a life back in Wales along with one in Spain.

But he has challenges. Challenges at his club and challenges at gaining the recognition he deserves. But we possess in a footballing superstar who is British – a 'crack', to use that Spanish term that was raised by City manager Manuel Pellegrini during the week – and one who could become the first player from these shores to win the Ballon d’Or since it integrated with the Fifa World Player of the Year.

Michael Owen was the last British Ballon d’Or winner back in 2001 but who was the last player to have the ability to excite that Bale possesses?

Bale will be 26 in July and is yet to reach his prime. Messi is 28 in June while Ronaldo is already 30. There is an incredible opportunity for Bale in the next two or three years if he can take it - which is what he wants.

And if he does then it is something we should all relish once we recognise what an outstanding player he already is.

The Effects of Smoking on the Body

Tobacco smoke is enormously harmful to your health. There’s no safe way to smoke. Replacing your cigarette with a cigar, pipe, or hookah won’t help you avoid the health risks associated with tobacco products.

Cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals, according to the American Lung Association. Many of those chemicals are poisonous and at least 69 of them can cause cancer. Many of the same ingredients are found in cigars and in tobacco used in pipes and hookahs. According to the National Cancer Institute, cigars have a higher level of carcinogens, toxins, and tar than cigarettes.

When using a hookah pipe, you’re likely to inhale more smoke than you would from a cigarette. Hookah smoke has many toxic compounds and exposes you to more carbon monoxide than cigarettes do. Hookahs also produce more secondhand smoke.

In the United States, the mortality rate for smokers is three times that of people who never smoked, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s one of the leading causes of preventable death.

One of the ingredients in tobacco is a mood-altering drug called nicotine. Nicotine reaches your brain in mere seconds. It’s a central nervous system stimulant, so it makes you feel more energized for a little while. As that effect subsides, you feel tired and crave more. Nicotine is habit forming.

Smoking increases risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, and poor eyesight. It can also weaken your sense of taste and sense of smell, so food may become less enjoyable.

Your body has a stress hormone called corticosterone, which lowers the effects of nicotine. If you’re under a lot of stress, you’ll need more nicotine to get the same effect.

In a condition called emphysema, the air sacs in your lungs are destroyed. In chronic bronchitis, the lining of the tubes of the lungs becomes inflamed. There’s a risk to nonsmokers, too. Breathing secondhand smoke has an immediate effect on the cardiovascular system. Exposure to secondhand smoke increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, and coronary heart disease.

Some of the more obvious signs of smoking involve the skin. The substances in tobacco smoke actually change the structure of your skin. Smoking causes skin discoloration, wrinkles, and premature aging. Your fingernails and the skin on your fingers may have yellow staining from holding cigarettes. Smokers usually develop yellow or brown stains on their teeth. Hair holds on to the smell of tobacco long after you put your cigarette out. It even clings to nonsmokers.

Smokers are at great risk of developing oral problems. Tobacco use can cause gum inflammation (gingivitis) or infection (periodontitis). These problems can lead to tooth decay, tooth loss, and bad breath.

Smoking also increases risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, and esophagus. Smokers have higher rates of kidney cancer and pancreatic cancer. Even cigar smokers who don’t inhale are at increased risk of mouth cancer.

Smoking also has an effect on insulin, making it more likely that you’ll develop insulin resistance. That puts you at increased risk of type 2 diabetes. When it comes to diabetes, smokers tend to develop complications at a faster rate than nonsmokers.

Smoking also depresses appetite, so you may not be getting all the nutrients your body needs. Withdrawal from tobacco products can cause nausea.

Restricted blood flow can affect a man’s ability to get an erection. Both men and women who smoke may have difficulty achieving orgasm and are at higher risk of infertility. Women who smoke may experience menopause at an earlier age than nonsmoking women. Smoking increases a woman’s risk of cervical cancer.

Smokers experience more complications of pregnancy, including miscarriage, problems with the placenta, and premature delivery.

Pregnant mothers who are exposed to secondhand smoke are also more likely to have a baby with low birth weight. Babies born to mothers who smoke while pregnant are at greater risk of low birth weight, birth defects, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Newborns who breathe secondhand smoke suffer more ear infections and asthma attacks.

It turns out that you'll get more information about how much a person sweats from knowing the overall size and shape of his or her body, rather than his or her sex, a new small study from Australia finds.

v People who have larger bodies — whether because they are on the taller side, or on the heavier side — tend to sweat more than those with smaller bodies, the study found.

Sweating is one of the two major ways the body cools itself down, according to the study, published Thursday (Feb. 23) in the journal Experimental Physiology. Sweating cools the body when sweat evaporates from the skin.

The other method the body uses to cool off is increasing the amount of blood flow to the skin, according to the study.

v When warm blood flows near the surface of the skin, some of the heat can be lost to the air.

Sex "has long been thought to influence sweating and skin blood flow during heat stress," lead study author Sean Notley, who worked on the study as a doctoral student at the University of Wollongong in Australia, said in a statement.

v But in the study, the researchers found that the body's main cooling method depends on a person's overall size and shape. Specifically, smaller people, whether male and female, are more dependent on increased skin blood flow for cooling than they are on sweating. In other words, they sweat less.

v Thirty-six men and 24 women participated in two experiments in the study. In one of the experiments, the men and women exercised on a stationary bike, at a light intensity, in an 82.4 degree Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) room with 36 percent humidity. In the second experiment, they exercised at a moderate intensity under the same conditions.

v At this temperature and humidity level, the body is able to successfully cope with the extra body heat produced during exercise, and avoid further rises in body temperature by using the two cooling methods, the researchers said.

v During the experiments, the researchers calculated the participants' overall body size by using a ratio of their total body surface to their body weight. They also measured the men and women's body temperatures, skin blood flow and sweat levels.

v They found that smaller people — both men and women — were more likely to depend on increased blood flow to the skin to cool down, while larger men and women were more likely to depend on sweating. Men and women with similar surface-area-to-weight ratios — in other words, similar shapes and sizes — used similar cooling methods, they found. In other words, body size and shape played a role, but sex did not.

v The researchers noted that the findings help explain why sex is thought to play a role in how much a person sweats: larger individuals sweat more, and men are typically larger than women, they wrote.
